At just 12 years old, while other children were running and playing, Bijoy Bhowmick’s life began to change.
What started as unexplained pain and stiffness slowly took over his body. For nearly 10 years after, his family searched for answers, moving from doctor to doctor, only to face confusion, misdiagnosis, and heartbreak. Although his symptoms began around 1997 when he was only 12 he was officially diagnosed only in 2007 at the age of 22.
By the time Bijoy was finally diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, the damage to his bones and joints had already become irreversible.
Bijoy remains completely bedridden. Now at 41, He cannot stand or walk. He cannot sit up or move without help.
Every day, he lives with severe chronic pain, extreme joint stiffness, restricted movement, breathing difficulties caused by Obstructive Sleep Apnea, digestive complications from Inflammatory Bowel Disease, painful skin flare-ups from Psoriasis, eye inflammation from Uveitis, and painful bed sores from years of immobility.
He has already undergone multiple surgeries, including hip and knee replacements, yet he remains confined to his bed.
Doctors have now advised lifelong treatment with Adalimumab injections, urgent revision surgeries, and intensive physiotherapy but the treatment will cost him lakhs, far beyond what his family can afford.
After spending their savings, taking loans, and exhausting every resource, his ageing parents and hardworking brother are left with nowhere else to turn.
Today, Bijoy has just one dream,
To stand again. To walk a few steps on his own. To live with dignity.
