“Appa, can you hear me?” I asked him softly a couple of days ago, as he lay in the ICU bed, barely moving. That moment still hasn’t left me.
I’m Supriya, a software engineer and the daughter of Mr. Suresh, a 54-year-old man. We are from Nandyal, Andhra Pradesh, and my dad is currently being treated at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore. He’s a kind, quiet man who worked as a Line Inspector in the Electrical Department for decades.
It started subtly 1.5 years ago. He began feeling bloated after meals. Then came the swelling in his legs, gas trouble, and a strange fullness in his stomach. We thought it was digestion-related until the scans revealed something we never imagined: Decompensated Chronic Liver Cirrhosis. In simple terms, his liver was permanently damaged and could no longer function well. That’s when everything changed.
He developed ascites, a condition where fluid fills the abdomen. His belly would swell so much that he needed to get it drained often. The procedure, called LVP, had to be done sometimes twice a month. Medicines stopped helping, his potassium levels rose dangerously, and he became weaker and more dependent on hospital care. He had diabetes for over 20 years, and recently, doctors found he had low thyroid function too.
We tried to hold it all together. My father kept working as long as he could. I stepped up to help financially. My mother stayed by his side day and night. But the hospital stays, procedures, and medications started eating through our savings. We’ve already spent over 6 lakhs, and that’s not the end.
He underwent a major procedure called TIPSS recently and has just come out of the ICU: still drowsy, barely responding. The next step is even bigger: a liver transplant, which needs to be done within a year and costs a set of lakhs.
